From Page 4 to AI Overviews in 50 Days

How an AEO/GEO Framework Took a Compliance Content Site from Invisible to AI-Cited

Market: Global (English) | Period: 2026 | Service: SEO & AI Visibility

The Problem

A regulated-industry content site had 60+ published pages. Good content. Accurate information. Proper compliance coverage. And almost zero visibility.

The pages were sitting on page 3 and 4 of Google for their target keywords. No featured snippets. No AI Overview citations. No AI Mode mentions. The content existed, but search engines weren’t treating it as authoritative.

The site owner had invested in quality writing but hadn’t applied any SEO framework. No internal linking strategy. No topical authority mapping. No structured data. Headers were creative instead of keyword-aligned. The content read well for humans but was invisible to machines.

What I Did

I applied the same AEO/GEO framework I use across all my projects. AEO is Answer Engine Optimization. GEO is Generative Engine Optimization. Both are built on the same principle: structure your content so that AI systems can extract, cite, and surface it. Traditional SEO gets you on the SERP. AEO/GEO gets you into AI Overviews and LLM responses.

The framework has four layers:

  • Technical foundation. Crawlability, site speed, schema markup, XML sitemap. The basics that most sites skip or half-finish.
  • Topical authority architecture. Content clusters mapped to specific expertise areas. Internal linking that tells Google “this site owns this topic.” Pillar pages connected to supporting articles.
  • E-E-A-T signal optimization. Author attribution, bylines, credentials, experience signals. For YMYL content, this isn’t optional. Google’s quality raters look for real expertise, and AI systems are trained on the same standards.
  • AI citation optimization. Direct answer formatting. Question-and-answer structures within articles. Concise, factual statements that AI systems can extract as citations. This is the layer most SEOs still don’t touch.

The Timeline

1–2Technical audit + fixes. Schema, speed, crawl errors.Indexed pages jumped from 34 to 58
3–4Topical authority mapping. Internal linking restructure.Average position improved from 38 to 22
5–6Content optimization. Headers, answer formatting, E-E-A-T.First featured snippet captured
7–8AI citation layer. Structured Q&A, factual extract blocks.First AI Overview citation appeared

50 days from the first technical fix to the first AI Overview citation. That’s not a magic number. It’s what happens when good content gets proper SEO architecture underneath it.

Why AI Visibility Matters Now

Google AI Overviews launched globally in 2024. By mid-2026, they appear on the majority of informational queries. AI Mode is rolling out. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude all cite web sources in their responses.

If your content isn’t structured for AI extraction, you’re invisible in the fastest-growing search channel. Traditional SEO gets you ranked. AEO/GEO gets you cited. In 2026, you need both.

The sites I’ve optimized show a consistent pattern: content that’s structured for AI citation earns 2–4x more click-through than content that ranks at the same position without an AI presence. The AI citation acts as a trust signal. Users see your content referenced by the AI, then click through to read the full piece.

What I Bring to This

16 years in SEO. I started ranking pages in 2010, before most people knew what content marketing was. I’ve watched every major algorithm shift happen in real time. Panda, Penguin, BERT, Helpful Content, AI Overviews.

The AEO/GEO layer is new. The fundamentals underneath it aren’t. Topical authority, E-E-A-T, user intent mapping, technical SEO. I didn’t pivot to AI visibility as a trend. I added it on top of a framework that was already working.

60+ pages ranked to top positions, including Position Zero and AI citations. That number keeps growing because the framework compounds. Each new piece of content strengthens the authority of every other piece on the site.

The same framework against a harder constraint. Finland’s 2027 gambling licence sets out the marketing rules Finnish content will have to satisfy, and AEO and GEO as still SEO is the underlying method this case study applies.
