Translation into Finnish and Estonian for regulated markets, where the wrong word is a compliance problem rather than a style problem.
What I translate, and since when
Translation work since 2005. Contracts, technical documents and marketing materials in Estonian, Finnish, English and German since June 2006, starting with an Israeli client group operating in Finland and Estonia and then across Europe. Legal translation since 2010. Terms of service and privacy policies for iGaming, crypto and trading platforms since 2017.
Language directions
I translate into Estonian, Finnish and English. Estonian and Finnish are native. I translate from those three plus German, Dutch and Russian. A job that needs delivery into German, Dutch or Russian is outside what I offer, and I will say so rather than take it.
Subject areas
- iGaming and gambling. Terms and conditions, responsible gambling material, licensing documentation, player-facing copy. Finnish work uses the vocabulary of the Gambling Act (Rahapelilaki 10/2026) rather than the superseded Lotteries Act wording that still circulates in older material.
- Legal and compliance. Contracts, terms of service, privacy policies, AML documentation, regulatory correspondence. Since 2010.
- Fintech, crypto and trading platforms. Platform terms, risk disclosures, onboarding and KYC copy. Since 2017.
- Medical, clinical skincare and technical. Product documentation, treatment protocols, technical manuals. The cosmetology and esthetics vocabulary comes from a CIDESCO diploma and practitioner work, not from a glossary.
- Marketing and search content. Landing pages, articles, product descriptions, with keyword and intent research done in the target language before the translation starts.
What this is not
I hold no state-conferred translator office in either country. I am not a Finnish authorised translator (auktorisoitu kääntäjä) and not an Estonian sworn translator (vandetõlk). Where a document must carry legal force in Finland or Estonia and the receiving authority requires a certified translation, that work has to go to a holder of the office, and I will tell you which document that applies to rather than let you find out at the counter.
This is translation and drafting. It is not legal advice, compliance certification or approval, and no compliance sign-off is offered. Your compliance function, responsible person or counsel reviews and approves what is delivered.
Localization means the research happens first
A page translated word for word targets the source market’s search behaviour in a different language. A Finnish player and an Estonian player use different terms for the same product, and both differ from the English-language original. Keyword and intent research in the target language comes before the translation, so the delivered page targets what people in that market actually search.
Regulatory framing shifts with the market as well. Finnish gambling copy from 1 July 2027 has to satisfy the content restrictions and the mandatory disclosures in Chapter 4 of the Gambling Act, which the position paper on marketing under the Finnish licence works through section by section. A translation that carries over the promotional tone of the English source will fail on the copy alone, whatever the channel.
Tools and process
MemoQ and SmartCat, with a translation memory and termbase kept per client. Terminology stays consistent across hundreds of pages, and repeated content is priced lower on every project after the first.
No machine translation. Post-edited machine output is a different service at a different quality level and I do not offer it.
How translation is quoted
Quotes depend on language pair, subject matter and volume. Legal and compliance material is quoted above marketing copy. Repeated content covered by translation memory is discounted, and so is ongoing volume. Request a quote.
Questions people ask before commissioning
Which directions do you work in?
Into Estonian, Finnish and English. From those three plus German, Dutch and Russian.
Can you certify a translation?
No. I hold no state-conferred translator office in Finland or Estonia. Documents needing a certified or sworn translation go to a holder of that office.
Do you use machine translation?
No. Human translation supported by CAT tools for consistency.
Can you handle gambling, fintech and crypto material?
That is the core of the practice. iGaming, crypto and trading platform terms of service and privacy policies since 2017, legal translation since 2010.
How is the work priced?
Per source word, quoted once I have seen the source files, with translation memory matches discounted.
